BRANCH 109, GIBSONS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE DECEMBER 2024

(This message was previously sent by email before Christmas but many did not see it or receive it)

Wilma Jones (outgoing President)

As we head towards the close of this year I would like to pause and reflect on the positives that have happened in this Legion, so often others focus on the negatives. Over the year we have hosted a large number of events for the community: Easter Breakfast, Mother’s Day Breakfast, and Christmas Breakfast. These have been successful thanks to a wonderful team of volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this happen and financially supported us in these ventures. We like to involve the community at large, especially children.

Again, we had an amazing Canada Day thanks to a large team of volunteers who helped bring it all together. We are so beholden to them for the time they spent on it and the support they give us. The only way we can successfully run this Legion is through our volunteers and everyone is so appreciated.

Our kitchen was extremely busy from November through December, again thanks to volunteers and Martin for cooking. This brought a good income into the Branch. Also thank you to Gabby and Wayne who do the Tuesday lunch and Thursday dinner.

Veterans and First Responders Dinner in November. We had a very large turnout and I was told it was the best ever, they say they are looking forward to it again next year. To the Veterans, you are forever in my heart.

Remembrance Day. Again I was told by many people that it was the best they had seen, between the outside ceremonies, inside ceremonies and the afternoon spent socializing with friends.

Our Poppy collection this year was over $13,000. Thanks to the diligence of that committee in getting this done when Carol had her foot in her boot and couldn’t drive. I am going to miss her so much, she has been here with me for the last 7 years, and we made a great team. I am going to miss being in my role as President, I gave my whole life to the Legion this year, but changes are necessary. My role is now Past President so I will still be around.

Thank you to Coastal Hosts for their Tuesdays and every second Friday events. Long may it continue. Maybe we can start up Friday dinners on alternate Fridays again in February/March.

At long last a plaque and picture has been installed above the bar acknowledging the great artwork of June Imanse, sadly we lost her this year, she was a very dear friend to many of us. Unfortunately, we have lost a few other members this year - they are hard to replace.

To the Executive, thanks for your support through the ups and downs of this year. We started the year in the red and ended in the black. A testament, in my eyes, to the hard work that went into ensuring this would happen. Good Luck to the new Executive for 2025.

And finally, thank you to our Bar Staff for your support throughout this year. It was greatly appreciated.

May I wish you and your family the very best of Health, Happiness and Prosperity in 2025

May your troubles be less

And your blessings be more

And nothing but happiness come through your door

Wilma Jones
